BRUNEI is such a small country that few people know it is there. Most people think it is an island but in fact it is an enclave on the north coast of that part of Borneo that belongs to Malaysia.

The country has an appalling environmental record, with one of the highest CO2 emission records per capita in the world.

To make matters worse, Brunei chooses not to participate with either the Environmental Performance Index or with Transparency International.021216-D-2987S-021<br />

Brunei is an absolute monarchy run by a sultan who has absolute power. There is no elected legislative body. In September 2004, the Sultan convened an appointed Parliament which had not met since independence in 1984, although it lacks any capacity beyond advising the monarch.

Press freedom is virtually non-existent, and some of the leading newspapers are little more than fawning publicity sheets for the ruling class. The Sultan of Brunei is one of the richest men in the world.

Crude oil and natural gas production account for nearly half of Brunei’s GDP.
