THE Kingdom of Cambodia is a country in South East Asia with a population of more than 13 million people, The capital is Phnom Penh.

Cambodia is rapidly becoming a client state of China which is backing the construction of six hydro-electric dams that will generate electricity mostly for sale to the main polluters of the region, Thailand and Vietnam.

Cambodia The country borders Thailand to its west and northwest, Laos to its northeast, and Vietnam to its east and southeast. In the south it faces the Gulf of Thailand.
The geography of Cambodia is dominated by the Mekong river (colloquially Tonle Thom or “the great river”) and the Tonlé Sap (”the fresh water lake”), an important source of fish which is under threat from the construction of dams, some of them funded by the Asian Development Bank.

Cambodia’s main industries are garments, tourism, and construction. In 2007, foreign visitors to the World Heritage site of Angkor Wat in the north of the country, totaled more than 4 million.

Press freedom is limited. According to the Worldwide Press Freedom Index the country ranks 126 out of 173. However, Phnom Penh Post stands out as an exception.

offshore_or_onshore_it's_dirty In 2005, oil and natural gas deposits were found offshore. When commercial extraction begins in 2011, oil revenues could profoundly affect Cambodia’s economy.

The resultant prosperity will most likely lead to an an increase in CO2 emissions which at present are the 6th lowest in the world.

The country has an appalling record on deforestation. Cambodia has not yet (December 2008) ratified the Kyoto Protocol. Until they do, some environmentalists believe that UN aid should be suspended.
