Glow Energy

GLOW Energy Public Company Limited is a Bangkok-based company quoted on the Stock Exchange of Thailand.

Glow and its subsidiaries engage in the generation and distribution of electricity, steam, and clarified and demineralized water for industry. The company also provides water for the general and petrochemical industries, and is involved in the development of power generation projects.

As at August 2008, its combined installed capacities include 1,708 megawatts of electricity and 967 tons per hour of steam. Glow Energy Pcl used to be a Suez-Tractebel subsidiary, and now it operates as a subsidiary of SUEZ Energy International.

Glow is proud to say that it is Thailand’s largest private producer of electricity and industrial utilities.(see their website for a “glowing” report) There can be no doubt that Glow is an outstanding contributor towards global warming and climate change.

Glow has a less than stellar record when it comes to noxious emissions, but despite that was awarded a contract in December 2007 to build a massive new coal-fired power station at Map  Tha Phut port industrial estate in Rayong Province.

Called the GHECO-One Power Plant Project, it is a joint venture between Glow and Hemaraj Land and Development Pcl, a major player on Thailand’s industrial estates.

If it goes ahead, as seems likely, the GHECO-One Power Plant  will supply electricity to the government-owned Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT).

Using carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies it is possible to produce coal without emitting vast quantities of CO2, but it makes coal more expensive. Glow does not seem to be much interested in applying CCS to any of its power plants, new or old.
