JAKARTA ~ The rapid expansion of oil palm plantations for profit in Indonesia is having a “catastrophic effect” on global climate, Greenpeace said yesterday.
The campaign group accused Indonesia of allowing “rampant destruction” of ancient forest, for palm oil, logging and other industry expansion.

TRANSPARENCY International’s 2008 Corruption Perceptions Index was launched in Papua New Guinea on Wednesday, despite objections by local politicians and business people.
Papua New Guinea is ranked 151 out of 180 countries surveyed worldwide with a score of 2.0 , the same as last year, indicating that levels of corruption have not changed.

BANGKOK ~ Cambodia has embarked on studies for the construction of a series of dams that will cost in excess of US$4 billion and do untold damage to the country’s fragile environment.
Local reports suggest that the government wants to build more than 10 dams and irrigation systems in four northwestern provinces.

SINGAPORE ~ Logging companies operating in Papua New Guinea allegedly paid US$67 million into a government minister’s private bank account in Singapore, says a statement from Greenpeace.

Too few biofuels meet eco-standards
SINGAPORE ~ Less than a fifth of the biofuel used on UK roads meets environmental standards , the Renewable Fuels Association reported recently.
