SINGAPORE ~ Singapore authorities have given the go-ahead in principle for the construction of a US$1.4 billion coal-fired co-generation power plant.
Local energy producer Tuas Power said in a statement received by Green Assembly, construction will commence next year and the plant will start operating in 2011.

AN INTERNATIONAL environmental conference for young people is slated to be held in Singapore from October 30-31, coinciding with the island’s international energy week.
Called the Asian Youth Energy Summit the conference has as its theme “Opportunities and Challenges for Clean Energy & Energy Efficiency in Asia”.

CLAIMS made by Greenpeace that illegal logging is rife in Papua New Guinea (PNG) have been dismissed as untrue by the island’s forestry association.
In a local newspaper report the PNG Forest Industry Association said Greenpeace had made “a series of claims over the past week which perpetuate(s) untruths about the forestry industry in the country.”

SINGAPORE ~ Logging companies operating in Papua New Guinea allegedly paid US$67 million into a government minister’s private bank account in Singapore, says a statement from Greenpeace.

SINGAPORE ~ A team of students from Singapore has won a major international prize for developing a computer software that makes for a cleaner environment.
Calling themselves the Trailblazers, the students developed a program called Environmental Monitoring System (EMS) and entered it in the Imagine Cup Embedded Development competition.
