World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)
THE World Tourism Organization (officially abbreviated as UNWTO) is a specialised agency of the United Nations with responsibility for tourism issues. It has worked with the tourism sector – including public authorities and private companies – to prepare a guiding framework for a climate neutral strategy for tourism. This strategy is set out in UNWTO’s 2007 Davos Declaration, and supports the industry’s proactive response to Climate Change.
WTO’s main initiative, ClimateSolutions.travel, aims to be the central gateway for information on solutions that can help the tourism sector respond to climate change and achieve Climate Neutral Tourism.
Registered users can share and learn about Climate Solutions that are already in operation or under development, and access climate Intelligence resources such as a documents library, RSS feeds, useful web site links and a Climate Solutions Wiki.
Tackling climate change is a global priority and a major challenge. Tourism - one of the world’s largest economic activities and a key service sector export and employment driver, particularly in developing countries - is directly and increasingly affected by climate change. Like several other sectors, tourism is also a major contributor to climate change.
