Rainforest Foundation International

November 2008:

THE Rainforest Foundation was founded in the UK 1989, since when it claims to have helped indigenous and local communities to protect more than 100,000 square kilometers of rainforest.

The foundation operates through three autonomous organisations - Rainforest Foundation US, Rainforest Foundation Norway, and Rainforest Foundation UK. These organisations directly support projects in more than 20 countries that protect tropical rainforests and the people that live in them.

The foundation tackles deforestation locally and globally. Locally it helps forest communities to gain land rights, challenges logging companies and manages forests for their own wellbeing and protection of their environment.

Globally it campaigns to influence national and international laws to protect rainforests and their inhabitants.

The Norway foundation has done good work in Asia, particularly in Papua New Guinea. The foundation in the US appears to focus mostly on Central and South America, leaving Rainforest Foundation UK to concentrate on Africa.
