SINGAPORE is an island state of tiny proportions located at the southern tip of mainland Malaysia in southeast Asia.
The country has an exceptionally high reputation for lack of corruption. According to Transparency International’s 2008 index, the island ranks fourth cleanest in the world and is by far and away the least corrupt in Asia.
However, despite the lack of corruption and its squeaky-clean image, Singapore’s environmental record is not of the highest.
In fact its citizens, approximately 4.5 million of them, emit more than 12 tonnes of CO2 each on average giving the country a dreadful global ranking of 189.
Singapore supports coal-fired power stations.
It is one of only a few countries worldwide that has not ratified the Kyoto Protocol and it persists in declining to participate in the Environmental Performance Index.
