VIETNAM, officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. It is bordered by China to the north, Laos to the northwest, Cambodia to the southwest, and the South China Sea to the east, says Wikipedia.

With a population of more than 86 million, Vietnam is the 13th most populous country in the world. In surface area it is about the same size as Malaysia and nearly as big as Germany. Its capital is Hanoi in the northern part of the country.

Vietnam: Late starter playing catchup with Thailand and Malaysia

Vietnam is a late developer and for the time being doesn’t have a particularly bad environmental record. But the country is playing catch-up and environmental degradation is spreading at an alarming speed and at an alarming cost to the global environment.

Officials are all-too-often prepared to turn a blind eye to illegal logging and deforestation, and there is next-to-no criticism by the media because of government controls over reporting. Vietnam comes 155 out of 167 on the Worldwide Press Freedom Index.
